The Socratic method, named after the Greek philosopher Socrates, is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue. It involves posing and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to elicit ideas and underlying assumptions. Socrates employed this method to aid his interlocutors in developing their understanding by scrutinizing commonly accepted beliefs. In educational settings, this method is utilized to foster deep thinking and to question preconceptions.
This project was inspired by my fascination with the Socratic method during my classroom experience. I noted how even the most reluctant students became engaged in discussions and inquiries within their small groups.
The key aspects of the project I considered include: 1) Articulating how the Socratic method bolsters critical-thinking skills, enhances dialogue, and refines debate techniques. 2) My intention is to deploy the Socratic method via workshops and online courses. 3) The significant advantages this project would offer to educators in the classroom setting. This approach could also serve as a professional development tool for teachers. 4) My expectation is that participants in these sessions and workshops will acquire valuable insights that will positively influence their students.
